Guest lecture: Climate Diplomacy and its Implications for Kyrgyzstan

On April 11, 2024, as part of the ongoing International Organizations and Kyrgyzstan in the International Organization Course, Senior Lecturer Taalaigul Usonova hosted an interactive guest lecture on Climate Diplomacy and its Implications for Kyrgyzstan. The lecture was delivered by Dastan Abdyldaev, an Expert on Climate Finance, Policy, Diplomacy, and Strategy at the Council on Sustainable Development and Climate Change of the Jogorku Kenesh of Kyrgyzstan.

Dastan Abdyldaev brings a wealth of experience to the discussion, having previously served as the Director at the Climate Finance Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Kyrgyzstan. Notably, he has represented Kyrgyzstan in key international climate forums such as the UNFCCC COPs and various other significant global gatherings related to climate change.

During the guest lecture, Dastan Abdyldaev provided students with a comprehensive overview of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, including its objectives, milestones, and the pivotal Paris Agreement. He delved into critical aspects such as financial support for mitigation plans up to 2030 and adaptation measures by 2025. Furthermore, he shared invaluable insights gleaned from his participation in COP 26, 27, and 28, shedding light on the agendas, decision-making processes, and Kyrgyzstan's initiatives, particularly focusing on the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions.

The lecture also explored the intricate Global Climate Finance Architecture, examining the roles of contributing countries, bilateral and multilateral institutions, as well as UNFCCC financial entities. Additionally, attention was given to Kyrgyzstan's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), with insights into ongoing and planned projects.

The interactive nature of the guest lecture facilitated engaging discussions and provided students with profound insights into climate diplomacy and policy-making. Dastan Abdyldaev's professional achievements and contributions served as a source of inspiration for the future professionals in attendance.
